What Is Roof Soft Washing?
How soft washing removes algae and growth from roofs without high pressure, and why it's the usual choice for South Florida tile.
What soft washing is
Soft washing is a way of cleaning roofs and exteriors with low water pressure and a cleaning solution, instead of relying on high-pressure spray. The solution does the work of loosening growth, and a gentle rinse carries it away.
Why it's used on tile
Clay and concrete tiles are durable but porous and textured, and high pressure can be hard on finishes, edges and the roof underneath. Soft washing lets a provider clean the surface without blasting it, which is why it's the common choice for tile roofs in South Florida.
And on shingle roofs
Asphalt shingles carry protective granules. Low pressure helps avoid loosening them while the cleaning solution handles the streaks.
How a soft wash usually works
- Look: the provider inspects the roof, access and what's below.
- Protect: plants, pools and walkways are typically wet down or covered.
- Apply: the solution goes on at low pressure, working from the ridge down.
- Rinse: the roof and surroundings are rinsed and reviewed.
Questions to ask a provider
- What method and products will you use on my roof type?
- How will you protect plants, the pool and pets?
- How do you move around a tile roof without damaging it?
- What should I expect to see after cleaning, and over time?
Runoff and local rules
Local stormwater rules aim to keep pollutants out of storm drains and waterways. Ask your provider how they manage runoff on your property.
